Desert Horizons Country Club: What Membership and Ownership Cost
The club publishes its membership categories but not its prices, so your budget should rest on its written schedule and the resale package.
What does Desert Horizons Country Club membership cost? The club doesn't publish prices on its website, and the figures floating around online don't agree with each other. The only numbers I'd budget from are the club's current written fee schedule and the HOA resale package for the specific house.
Here's what the club itself says. Desert Horizons is a member-owned private club in Indian Wells built around one 18-hole Ted Robinson course. Its homes page counts 22 custom estate homes, 210 single-family residences, and 288 paired condos. You get a 40,000-square-foot clubhouse, a Courts Pavilion with 2 lighted tennis courts and 11 pickleball courts, a fitness and wellness center, and 10 neighborhood pools. The golf page says a strict membership cap keeps tee times easy to get.
The club lists five ways in. Full Golf is unlimited golf and every amenity, with access for a spouse or partner. Associate Golf is for golfers 50 and under, with the same playing privileges and reduced initiation and dues. Social covers dining, wellness, racquet sports, fitness, and the social calendar, with limited golf. Invitational is an annual membership for Indian Wells area residents with no initiation fee, and the club says space is limited. And there's a one-time 60 or 90 day guest privilege that opens everything before you decide.
Do you have to join to own a home there? The club's homes page describes residents as members, and some agent pages say every new owner must take a social membership. I haven't seen that rule in the club's own published material, so I treat it as a question for the CC&Rs, the club bylaws, and the club in writing. If it applies, it's a cost of the house, not an option, and it belongs in your budget before you write an offer.
Search the cost and you'll find initiation and dues numbers on several agent sites. They're from different dates and they disagree. Some look recent, some are clearly old. I'm not repeating any of them, and I'd say the same about my own site: a number on a web page is a lead, not a budget. Club fees change by board decision, and the version that counts is the one the club hands you.
What does an owner actually pay each month? Think in layers. The HOA assessment, which can be more than one association depending on the neighborhood. Dues for whichever membership you hold. An initiation or capital fee when you join. Golf if you add it. Any assessments or transfer charges. Listings often quote one blended monthly figure without saying what's in it. Ask what's in it.
The resale package answers the HOA side: the current assessment, the budget, the reserves, and anything pending. The club's written schedule answers the membership side. You need both, and you need them early, not in the last week of your contingency period.
Here's how I handle any club purchase, this one included. Early in the deal I ask for the club's current written fee schedule for the membership the buyer wants, the membership rules that apply to that property, and the HOA resale documents. Then I build a one-page annual cost sheet: HOA, club dues, initiation, golf, assessments. The buyer sees the whole number before falling for the house, and well before contingencies come off.
If you're not sure the club fits, the guest privilege is the honest test. Sixty or 90 days of golf, courts, dining, and the social calendar will tell you more than any brochure. The club says 35% of its homeowners live there year-round, which matters if you plan to be here past April.
Comparing it with other Indian Wells clubs? Compare structure, not just the scorecard. Who owns the club, whether membership is tied to the house, how golf access is capped, and what each category costs today. Ask every club the same questions and get the answers on paper.
To request the schedule, the club lists (760) 340-5501 and membership@deserthorizons.org. Or ask me, and I'll request it along with the resale package for the house you're looking at.
